Verra Issues First Digitally Verified Carbon Credits Under dMRV Pilot
Verra has approved the world's first carbon credits under its digital MRV (dMRV) pilot for high-frequency issuances — a landmark moment that validates continuous, automated verification as an operational standard for the voluntary carbon market.
The credits come from the Foumbouni-Mitsamiouli solar farm project in the Union of Comoros, operated by Innovent Comores and Aera Group. Rather than waiting for the traditional annual verification cycle, the project now receives approval monthly or bi-monthly based on continuously monitored generation data — a fundamental shift in how carbon market infrastructure operates.
How High-Frequency dMRV Works
Under Verra's pilot framework, 80% of approved credits are released immediately upon verification approval, with 20% withheld as a safeguard buffer during the pilot phase. After one full year of high-frequency issuances, the project must complete one traditional full-cycle verification to confirm the digital data. This risk-managed approach allows Verra to validate dMRV infrastructure without sacrificing market integrity.
The operational cost reduction is substantial: industry analysis estimates that digitally automated verification reduces OpEx by 50–70% compared to physical site visits and annual audits. For project developers, this translates directly into improved project economics and reduced time-to-revenue.
Expansion to Other Project Types
Verra is extending the dMRV pilot to carbon capture and storage (CCS) activities and clean cookstove projects — two segments where continuous sensor-based monitoring is already technically feasible. This signals that the pilot is a platform-level architectural change, not a one-off accommodation for a single project type.
The BioCarbon Standard, in partnership with Planet 2050, established a Digital MRV Working Group in October 2025 with a phased roadmap for full dMRV integration across its carbon, biodiversity, and water certification programs. The momentum behind digital verification is now multi-standard, not confined to Verra.
TrustVal Perspective
As an industrial dMRV platform, TrustVal has been building toward exactly this milestone. The Verra pilot confirms that continuous, auditable digital monitoring is now the benchmark for high-integrity carbon crediting — not a future aspiration. For corporate buyers and project developers evaluating their MRV approach, the question is no longer whether to adopt dMRV, but how fast.
