Verra Approves First dMRV Carbon Credits — Monthly Issuance Now Live

TrustVal Team  |  19 April 2026  |  5 min read

Verra has approved the first carbon credits issued under its digital MRV (dMRV) high-frequency issuance pilot — a landmark moment for the voluntary carbon market. Projects enrolled in the pilot can now receive verified credits on a monthly or bi-monthly basis, replacing verification cycles that previously took one to three years. At the same time, Verra published updated Article 6 label guidance introducing a new Correspondingly Adjusted label to prevent double-counting in national greenhouse gas inventories.

From Annual Cycles to Monthly Credits

Traditional carbon credit verification follows a fixed cadence: projects collect monitoring data over one to three years, engage a third-party auditor, submit for registry review, and receive credits months after the emissions reductions occurred. This lag creates cash flow uncertainty for project developers and limits the responsiveness of supply to market demand.

Verra's dMRV pilot addresses this directly. By integrating satellite imagery, IoT sensors, and automated data pipelines into the verification process, the pilot enables continuous monitoring and near-real-time data submission. The registry can then issue credits on a rolling monthly or bi-monthly basis, dramatically shortening the revenue cycle. The first approved credits under this system demonstrate that the technical infrastructure works at scale.

Project Types Now Covered

The initial dMRV pilot launched with cookstove projects — a high-volume, geographically distributed project type where manual monitoring has historically been expensive and error-prone. Verra has now expanded the pilot to cover carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, with additional project types under review. The expansion signals that dMRV is not a niche tool for forest carbon but a cross-methodology capability that can transform verification economics across the entire VCM.

TrustVal perspective: This is the single most important structural change in VCM project economics in 2026. Shorter issuance cycles reduce developer financing costs, improve credit price discovery, and make projects more attractive to institutional buyers who need regular supply. TrustVal's dMRV platform is built precisely for this environment — we help project developers implement sensor and satellite-based monitoring that meets Verra's evolving technical requirements.

New Article 6 Correspondingly Adjusted Label

In parallel, Verra's 13 April 2026 guidance update introduces a formal Correspondingly Adjusted (CA) label for carbon credits where the host country has issued an Article 6 Letter of Authorisation and applied a corresponding adjustment in its national inventory. This label provides buyers with unambiguous evidence that a credit has not been double-counted — critical for both compliance use under Article 6.2 bilateral agreements and for corporate buyers whose claims may face scrutiny under national accounting rules.

The CA label is expected to command a price premium over unlabelled VCM credits, as it resolves the integrity uncertainty that has suppressed demand from sovereign and institutional buyers. Projects enrolling in dMRV pilots that also secure CA labels will sit at the intersection of the two highest-value categories in the current market.

Gold Standard Pilot Running in Parallel

Verra's move accelerates a broader industry shift. Gold Standard is running its own dMRV pilot until October 2026, testing digital technology integration across its certified project portfolio. Together, the two dominant voluntary standards now treat dMRV as an active development priority rather than a future concept. Market participants who have not yet assessed their dMRV readiness face growing competitive disadvantage in credit issuance speed and integrity credibility.
