Verra has approved the first carbon credits issued under its digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (dMRV) pilot program. The milestone marks a fundamental shift in how carbon markets verify emission reductions: from manual, annual audits to continuous, technology-driven verification cycles.
The first project to receive credits under the pilot is the Foumbouni-Mitsamiouli solar farm (Project 3788) on Grande Comore in the Comoros. SustainCERT conducted an entirely digital verification of monitoring data submitted by project developers Innovent Comores and Aera Group, eliminating the need for on-site audit visits.
Under traditional verification, projects wait 12 to 18 months between credit issuances. The dMRV pilot compresses this to monthly or bi-monthly cycles. Faster issuance improves project economics by accelerating revenue flows and reducing working capital requirements for developers.
Verra is now piloting dMRV-based high-frequency issuance for two additional project categories: carbon capture and storage (CCS) activities and clean cookstove projects. Each category presents distinct digital verification challenges, from continuous sensor data in CCS to usage monitoring in cookstove distribution.
The expansion signals that dMRV is not limited to straightforward grid-connected renewables. If Verra can demonstrate reliable digital verification across these diverse project types, the case for industry-wide dMRV adoption strengthens considerably.
Why this matters for carbon markets: Digital MRV addresses the two largest barriers to voluntary carbon market growth — verification speed and data integrity. Monthly issuance cycles reduce counterparty risk, improve price discovery, and give corporate buyers greater confidence in credit quality. The ICVCM has now approved 101 million credits with its Core Carbon Principles label, and dMRV infrastructure will be critical to scaling this further.
The timing aligns with the EU adopting its first three CRCF methodologies for permanent carbon removals (DACCS, BioCCS, biochar) and ICVCM expanding its CCP label to six new carbon dioxide removal methodologies. Together, these developments signal a market converging around digital, automated verification as the backbone of credit integrity.
For project developers, the message is clear: invest in dMRV-compatible monitoring infrastructure now. For corporate buyers, the availability of digitally verified credits with high-frequency issuance creates a new tier of auditable, real-time carbon procurement.
