Verra issued the first carbon credits carrying the Core Carbon Principles (CCP) label on February 24, 2026. The credits went to the UpEnergy Social and Climate Impact Programme in Nigeria, a project that manufactures and distributes energy-efficient cookstoves across the country. This marks the first time Verra's Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) methodology VM0050 produced credits meeting the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market's (ICVCM) benchmark for high-integrity offsets.

The CCP label functions as a quality seal. It tells buyers that the underlying methodology passed rigorous scrutiny for additionality, permanence, and robust monitoring. In a market plagued by credibility questions, this label creates a clear dividing line between credits that meet the industry's highest standard and those that do not.

CCP Adoption Accelerates

The numbers tell a compelling trajectory. CCP-tagged retirements represented just 3% of total voluntary market retirements in H1 2025. By H2 2025, that share jumped to 7%. Current Q1 2026 data suggests CCP-labeled credits now account for roughly 12% of retirements — a fourfold increase in under a year.

This acceleration reflects buyer behavior shifting decisively toward verified quality. Corporate procurement teams increasingly treat the CCP label as a minimum threshold rather than a premium feature. The reputational risk of purchasing unlabeled credits grows with every headline about greenwashing scandals and offset controversies.

Market signal: High-integrity nature-based removal credits now command prices above $35 per tonne, while low-rated avoidance credits struggle to find buyers at any price. The voluntary carbon market's structural bifurcation creates a 300%+ price gap between quality tiers.

Clean Cooking: A Proof of Concept

The choice of clean cookstoves as the first CCP-labeled methodology carries strategic significance. Cookstove projects deliver measurable co-benefits: reduced indoor air pollution, lower deforestation pressure, and direct health improvements for communities. The UpEnergy project alone expects to prevent 1.6 million tonnes of CO₂e emissions annually.

ICVCM selected this methodology because it demonstrates that high-integrity verification works at scale in developing countries. The clean cooking sector processes some of the largest credit volumes in the VCM, making it an ideal testing ground for the CCP framework.

What This Means for Buyers

Three developments converge to make this milestone commercially significant. First, the SBTi's revised Corporate Net Zero Standard V2.0 — expected in 2026 — will likely require or strongly recommend CCP-labeled credits for the 10,000+ companies in its framework. Second, CORSIA's expansion of eligible credits opens aviation compliance demand to CCP-labeled supply. Third, the EU's Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF) creates a regulatory pathway that rewards credits with third-party integrity verification.

Forward-looking buyers already price in this convergence. The value of forward carbon credit agreements reached $5.8 billion in 2025, up 58% year-over-year. Long-term offtake contracts for high-integrity credits now dominate procurement strategies at major corporates.

TrustVal's Perspective

At TrustVal, we see the CCP label as the starting gun for the voluntary market's professionalization phase. The era of buying the cheapest available credit ends here. Companies that build portfolios around CCP-labeled and equivalent high-integrity credits protect themselves against regulatory tightening, reputational risk, and the growing price premium on quality.

The market's message rings clear: trust costs money, but mistrust costs more.
